Baskets

So, I didn’t get really creative with the title of the post, but baskets and storage are a rather utilitarian subject, so why not have a fitting title.  It is the nesting season (no babies necessary) and I have baskets on the brain.  I feel like I’m always searching for that perfect basket for something or another.  They’re great for corralling shoes, winter gear, firewood, toys, blankets, books, magazines, remote controls, and all of lifes other stuff.

You can never have too many baskets.

Oh, the wonders of baskets.  They’ve been in existence forever and are stilling going strong today.  We have loads in the store and you need them.  We’re open Thursday – Saturday 10-5.

How appropriate

Just last week I was posting about vintage blankets and how beautiful and zesty they can be, and then I came across this quilt roundup on apartment therapy.  Now a few of them are not vintage, but rather vintage inspired, which we at Gather and Collect love just as much.  Here’s one of the pretty pictures from the original post.

Heirloom quilts in general are much harder to come by, unless of course you have a very talented friend or family member (or you yourself are very talented) who has generously gifted you one.  I have never been as lucky, so all of you talented friends of mine out there…wink wink;)

BUT, we do come across beautiful quilts from time to time, and more commonly but just as beautiful, we have many beautiful afghans and wool blankets that can add just as much zest to a room as a quilt.  Point being, we love to find all the long lost beautiful blankets of the world and offer them to you at our store.  After all, who doesn’t love to snuggle on the couch with a beautiful blanket.

Cheers to a vintage life well lived!

Happy Weekend

It’s one of those amazing long weekends that are few and far between.  I sure hope you guys have some great plans, whether it be going on a short trip, taking a long overdue nap or finishing that great book you’ve been reading.

Whatever you have planned for the weekend, remember to stop, breathe and look around a little.

I’m always amazed at the places I find inspiration.  It can be from the color of an acorn, to the texture of the drying grasses or the blue color of the sky against the green of the trees.

Where ever your weekend finds you, I hope its enjoyable.

Cheers to a vintage life well lived.

Getting cozy

It’s a beautiful week here in the midwest.  Our indian summer has finally arrived and I couldn’t be happier.  I believe it’s supposed to be in the 70’s through the weekend, but I’ve already dove into fall and I’m ready to cozy up on the couch under a nice warm blanket and a book.  How about you?

A beautiful afghan, quilt or wool blanket looks great draped over a chair or sofa.  Or even nicely laid over the end of a bed (like above).  What a great dash of color they can add to a room.  Come take a look at what we have in the store.  We’ve been collecting blankets with you in mind.

Boo!

Who else is excited for the Halloween season?  This is by far my favorite time of the year in terms of decorations.  And now that I have children, I have a fantastic reason to get dressed up and make a fool of myself.  We’ve always been really good at decorating the exterior of our house, but we’ve never decorated the inside.  This year I vowed to change that.  So, onto pinterest I went scouring for inspiration.  Here’s what I found…

Pretty fun, right?!!  Well, let it be known that I did find a little inspiration for my own house, but this year I only got  around to decorating the mantel.  That’s what happens when you’re trying to work and raise a family at the same time.  Anyhow, here’s a snap shot of how it turned out.

My kids were psyched to come home and see that I had decorated, even if it was just the mantel.

We have both spooky and sweet decorations in the store.  It’s also fun to incorporate some orange and black pottery, maybe some brass candleholders, and various pumpkins, all of which we have in the store.  This is a great time of the year to think outside of the box for decorations and have a little fun.

Thrifter’s House Tour

If you’ve never ever been to a single flea market in your life, well, this house tour pretty much sums up what you’re missing.

(House tour found here)

Considering we do a fair amount of shopping at flea markets, so much of this we have in the store.  Come by and have a look.

We’re open Thursday-Saturday 10-5.

An Ode to Color…Orange.

I can’t think of another color that’s as incredibly warm and inviting as the color orange.  I’m not the biggest fan of the cooler weather, but I’m a HUGE fan of the outside color changes this time of the year brings.  And i’m an even bigger fan of Halloween…so bring on the orange!!!

(all images from here)

The color orange instantly grounds a room, and you really don’t need much of it.  A few throw pillows, a blanket, curtains,  a lamp, or paint the whole room orange if you wish.  I just looked around my house and realized that I have a bit of orange in every single room.  I may just have to post some photos for y’all to see sometime when time and light cooperate with my camera.  You know how it goes.

We have been working hard to bring doses of warm colors to the store, so stop by and see what we have to help you warm up your spaces.

Cheers to a vintage life well lived.

Wear ’em if you’ve got ’em.

Yes, unfortunately and fortunately it’s hat time of the year.  Oops, I meant THAT time of the year;)  I say fortunately because fall is such a beautiful, dependable time.  But unfortunately because if you live in our neck of the woods, then you know what comes after fall.  In the meanwhile, let us rejoice in hat season…

(All images from here, of course.)

We have been scouting out wonderfully stylish and fun vintage hats for your wearing pleasure and bringing them in by the truck loads.  And no, I’m not exaggerating one tiny bit.

Vintage bazaar

Have y’all ever heard of or been to The Vintage Bazaar in Chicago? It’s a pop up flea market in the city that only happens a few times a year, and this past weekend was the latest one. My entire family, kids, cousin and all, ventured out to explore this urban market.

Of course there were owls everywhere.

20110919-094303.jpg
The collections of afghans were beautiful.

This collection of suitcases was completely inspiring.

Although the market was very creative and well curated, I did miss the whole digging for a treasure aspect you get from a traditional flea market. Basically everything was fantastic, so no digging had to be done.
If you’ve ever taken your kids to a flea market before, you know they can quickly become bored unless you give them something to search for. Well, thankfully I brought along my ingenious cousin who quickly found some entertainment even I could appreciate.

And then it started getting a little stranger.

So, everyone found their fun, and of course I didn’t leave empty handed;).
And at the end of the day, even my son said he had fun. Mission accomplished. So check out the pop up flea next time around.
Cheers to a vintage life well lived.
